Michelle: What comes first when you write a picture book – the big picture or the small details?
Darcy: It’s an interactive process. Sometimes a detail affects the plot or character, but sometimes, the vision drives everything. For PRAIRIE STORMS, the balance of animals dictated so much. For example, I wanted to feature mammals, birds and reptiles. After deciding on which animals to include, I had to research each and learn about their specific habitat and their behaviors, which affected the actual writing, too.
